| Christoffe
Payonne ("Atan Chris") lived Jakun style in the forest near Sungai
Chini. |
| In
1994, age 31, he died of malaria
and was buried Jakun style: |
| After a wake, a grave and coffin are made; |
he
is
publicly washed and clothed, and gets money between his lips 'to buy
food';
| face
covered ('to not let his spirit know the way back'), he is taken to the
grave yard; he is laid down facing north -- feet to
the west, 'following the sun' -- and final words are spoken to him. |
His
grave is closed and decorated with personal belongings
(clothes
are burnt a few days later 'to pass them on to him').
| Afterwards,
people 'clean' their hands and take part in a kenduri (meal given
only at
birth, wedding, and death); later, the grave is walled 'to
make it a home'. |
