Research
I obtained master degrees in philosophy and psychology. I got my PhD in 1995 at the Free University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Currently I'm a principal investigator (PI) at the Donder Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, my main research line being Theoretical Cognitive Science. My research focuses on
1) Representation as an explanans and explanandum in AI and CNS
2) Abduction (inference to the best explanation) in natural cognitive systems and its relevance to the problem of common sense (frame problem) in AI
3) Embodied Embedded Cognition and its implications (e.g. for behavioral control in robots)
4) Intention, agency and autonomy, both in its attributive and phenomenological sense (with connections to Brain-Computer Interfacing (BCI) and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI)
5) Ethical implications of research and technology in AI and CNS
