SKETCH |
|
|
|
I am an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology and Artificial Intelligence and affiliated with the Centre for Cognition of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Also, I am a Research Affiliate of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen. I earned BA, MA, and PhD degrees (all three with highest honor) in Experimental Psychology from Radboud University Nijmegen. After spending a postdoctoral year (1992-93) in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, Cambridge, USA, I have been a Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen, between 1993-98 and 1999-2006. From 1998 to 2001, I have held positions as Lecturer in Psychology and Reader in Cognitive Science at the University of Exeter, England. From May 2004 till May 2009, I coordinated the NWO VICI project "Goal-referenced control of verbal and nonverbal actions" at Radboud University Nijmegen. In my research, I use response time, eye tracking, electrophysiological, hemodynamic neuroimaging, molecular genetic, and computational modeling techniques to study attention and language performance. |

Attention and language performance [Aandacht en taalprestatie] In my research, I address the question of how attention determines language performance. Attention and language are among the most intensively researched abilities in the cognitive neurosciences. However, there is a lack of understanding of how our attention and language abilities are related. Until recently, an implicit assumption was that most psychological processes underlying speaking, reading, and listening happen automatically. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that language performance cannot happen without paying some form of attention, even though speaking, listening, and reading are among the most highly exercised psychological skills in adults. For example, that speaking requires attention is evident from the effort associated with talking while driving a car in heavy traffic or talking in a foreign language. Moreover, it seems that written and spoken words cannot be recognized without paying some form of attention. Attention is also needed for self-monitoring, through which language users assess whether planning and performance are consistent with
intent. The dependence of language processes on attention points to the need to investigate how attention determines the various tasks of producing and understanding language.
Research on attention and language performance is not just of academic interest, but also of practical importance. Evidence suggests that attention deficits contribute to the impaired language performance of children and adults with specific language impairment (SLI). Moreover, studies suggest that attention mechanisms are critically implicated in reading and that disruption of these mechanisms may play a role in reading difficulties and dyslexia. Also, individuals with aphasia often present with attention deficits and these deficits may negatively affect their language production and comprehension. Accumulating evidence suggests that attention training may improve impaired language performance.
It is unlikely that we will be able to understand the increasingly complex set of variables that are known to influence attention and language performance, associated deficits, and their remediation, without computational modeling. Therefore, I have worked, in collaboration with various colleagues, on a
computationally implemented theory for language performance (i.e., speaking,
listening, and reading) and its attentional control, developed in close
interaction with empirical work. The theory combines (1) an account of the
various processes underlying word production and its relation with spoken and
visual word recognition, (2) an account of how goals and attention determine
perception and production, and (3) an account of self-monitoring and
the relation between self-monitoring and speech comprehension. The model that
instantiates the theory, WEAVER++ (WEAVER++ on the web), successfully simulates a wide range of relevant response
time findings, speech errors, brain imaging data, and findings on
impairments. For example, WEAVER++ successfully simulates several classic
data sets obtained with the Stroop task ("the gold standard of attentional measures"), including incongruency, congruency,
reverse Stroop, response set, semantic gradient, time course, stimulus,
spatial, multiple task, manual, bilingual, training, age, and pathological
effects (e.g., in schizophrenia). The
Stroop task requires naming the ink color of a color word, e.g., GREEN, or reading the word aloud (for an interactive
demonstration of the Stroop phenomenon, click on the icon below).
In my experimental work, I use response time techniques, hemodynamic neuroimaging and genetic methods, electrophysiological techniques, and eye tracking. Using these methods, I have studied morphological planning (with Dirk Janssen), the relation between speech production and perception (with Rebecca Özdemir), the relation between language and numbers (with Marjolein Korvorst), attention in bilingual performance (with Kim Verhoef), differences and commonalities between languages (Train-Min Chen has implemented a WEAVER++ version for Mandarin Chinese), verbal and nonverbal performance (with Martijn Lamers), and the neural basis of attentional control (with Esther Aarts).

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) made more than a dozen paintings of weavers in admiration of their craftsmanship and for the Rembrandtesque clair-obscure effect of the artificial gas-light in which they worked. Shown above are two paintings—made by Van Gogh in 1884—both called "Weaver with loom". More work of Van Gogh on this topic can be found in the Kröller-Müller museum in Otterlo and in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. |
